Soft top frame corrosion

another problem that i need some advice on. The fabric on my soft top is in excellent condition and only about 5yrs old. Fully renovated it with the Autoglym hood restorer and it came up great. One (major!) problem.

The front aluminium bow section of the roof (bit that attaches to the top of the windscreen surround) appears to be really coorded under the fabric . Tell tail signs are lumps appearing under the fabric on the top exposed edge and a fine dust that falls from the roof into the car when i open the roof up.

Not knowing much about how the roof fabric is attached, any ideas on how to remedy this problem? Also what am i going to find when i expose the metal bow section?

Hey Saab Sven,

I had (have) the exact same problem, when i'd retract the hood i'd get a light sprinkling of white powder, very nice!

I took out all the screws along the inside of the 'bow' section and removed the retaining strip, underneath was lots of white corrosion. But this only exposes so much, as far as i could tell, the roof material is actually glued onto the metal and i wasn't prepared to remove it any further.

The best i could do was remove as much of the corrosion as possible with sand paper and a wire brush, then screwed everything back together.

The metal is aluminium and eventually it will corrode with these white flakes.
The only way to totally cure the problem would be to unglue the front of the roof, but this is to much for me, will wait till roof needs renewing and do it then.

Thanks for the response, we cant be the only ones with this problem? annoying thing is that the roof is only 4yrs old and in great condition otherwise. so waiting for a new roof is not really an option. Will take off the inside trim and have a look (also now in latest heavy rain got a leak behind the rear view mirror, just to add a bit of fun to the problem).

Think that a major cause is the fact that the hood has not been waterproofed for years and water has saturated it causing the corrosion (assuming aluminium corrosion is due to water?). Also noticed that the front hood frame rubber is not screwed down in all locations, maybe cos' bow member is too corroded.

I will keep the forum posted on how i get on and wether its a professional job required. In the mean time, any other usefult tips appreciated.
