I need to replace the gear knob in my 6-speed Aero as the finish on it has corroded away (the matt-silver on top of the knob) and it's very rough/unpleasant to hold. I was just going to go to a breakers yard for one; to increase my chances of getting one, can anyone advise if the gear knobs in 9-3s are the same as in the 9-5 of the same vintage? Hopefully they haven't changed at all since 2005 and I'll be able to source one easily!

You just wait a few more months or years and the gear knobs will just fly off when youre doing 70mph on the motorway.!!!!!!!!

Think they are just a lift off jobby. Try and get equal pressure on the base of the thing to lift it off the spline

According to the Saab WIS (Workshop Information System) the gear knob is glued on. The official way of removing it is to remove the gear selector information and cut out the plastic underneath. So I guess out of the factory they are glued on ...but not very well!

I reckon it might be worth phoning the dealer for the price of a brand new one, it may be quite reasonable and it would look far better shiny and new in my opinion.

The gear knob on my brother's '05 9 3 convertible was held on by a clip that broke. He bought a brand new one from a saab indy for ÂŁ50.

Mine is a bit pitted so I'm going to try rubbing it down with very fine wet and dry paper.

^Haha, mine did this just this weekend past; damn near took out my passenger; she got a fair fright when the thing bounced off the roof and landed in her lap.

Still not been able to source a replacement though...[/b]
Same as mine! Was accelerating hard and ended up catching it as it bounced around the car!!! Funny on reflection but not at the time....

My Aero was in for a service so I asked them to fit a new grip (as I assumed this was how it held in place)-apparently not and Saab wanted ÂŁ130 for a new gear knob!! I couldn't believe it, so simply put some electrical tape around the top of the lever and forced the knob back on and not a problem since-this was 6 months back....

well just as an update last week the nice silver bit on the top of the geart knob decided to come off, Well I had a chuckle as it was something I just didnt expect.Anyway out came the loctite gel superglue and its back on.

Never had so much trouble with any gear knob before on any car,inc 4 earlier saabs.

Quality!!!!!!

Super glue to hold the silver bit on and tin foil wedged onto the top of the gear stick to hold the gear knob on. Works for me, haven't had to catch the blasted thing whilst driving for a while now!!

Just don't loose the spring.

Impact Adhesive worked for my knob (oo-er) but I threw the spring away as it was this that was forcing the knob off the shaft, not had any problems with it since and that was around 18 months ago.

The 04 9-3 2.2 tids are the pinacle of quality.

I cut my spring in half and jammed the knob on with foil, though it does work without the spring as you say.

The spring is to push the reverse thingy back down, is it not? I dispensed with mine at the weekend, but it seems to catch without the spring, so I'll try the foil.

I forgot to moan about it at the garage last week when it was in for coil springs + burst tyre (fair play paid for by SAAB), and then found to need an EGR (I was ignoring the engine light). Least of my worries!

Happy days!

Loctite Double Bubble is what you will find they use at the Saab Dealers to rectify this one. It's a fast set two part epoxy that you can pick-up from various places including online. My local dealer was kind enough to give me a pack FOC.

For information a new gear knob is over ÂŁ100 And this doesn't even include the badge on the top with the gate info which is circa ÂŁ30!
